Gamma Distribution

A continuous random variable follows the Gamma distribution with shape and rate (equivalently, scale ), defined for all by the probability density function

where is the Gamma function, defined by the integral

The Gamma function satisfies , and for positive integers , making it a continuous extension of the factorial.

The Gamma distribution models nonnegative, right-skewed quantities such as waiting times and accumulated amounts. A key interpretation: if events arrive as a Poisson process with rate , then the waiting time to the -th event is (for integer ).

Special cases:

The cumulative distribution function of the Gamma distribution is

where is the lower incomplete gamma function.

A key characteristic of the Gamma family is shape control: governs skewness/peakedness and sets the time/scale. For , the density has a mode at ; for , it is decreasing from at .

Rate vs. Scale Parameterization scale instead of rate . Then, with . Check which convention a class/text uses.

Intuition

The Gamma distribution generalizes the Exponential from “time until the first event” to “time until the -th event” in a Poisson process. If you are waiting for a single event at rate , the wait is . If you need events to occur, the total wait is —the sum of independent exponential waiting times.

Beyond waiting times, the Gamma is a flexible family for modeling any nonnegative, right-skewed quantity. Small produces a sharply peaked density near with a long tail; large yields a bell-shaped density shifted away from that increasingly resembles a Gaussian (by the central limit theorem, since the Gamma with integer is a sum of i.i.d. exponentials).

Properties

(Mean) .

(Variance) .

(Mode) If , . (If , the mode is at .)

(MGF) For ,

(Sum) If are independent with a common rate , then

This follows directly from the MGF: the product of individual MGFs yields a Gamma MGF with summed shape parameters.

(Scaling) If and , then in rate form. Equivalently, in scale form: .

(Memorylessness?) Only the case (exponential) is memoryless; for , the Gamma is not memoryless.

(Poisson Process Waiting Time) If is Poisson with rate and is the waiting time to the -th arrival, then .

(Conjugacy with Poisson) If and (rate form), then

This makes the Gamma the conjugate prior for the Poisson likelihood, analogous to how the Beta is conjugate to the Bernoulli.

(Beta Connection) If and are independent, then and , with the ratio and the sum being independent.

Examples

Erlang Waiting Time

Customers arrive at a service desk according to a Poisson process with rate per hour. The manager wants to know the distribution of the time until the th customer arrives.

Bayesian Estimation of a Poisson Rate

A scientist counts radioactive decays and observes decays in three one-second intervals. She assumes with prior .
