Projection Theorem

For any vector and a subspace , the projection of onto is the unique linear operator in that minimizes the distance between and , defined as

such that and the residual vector .

Then, the general solution of , given a matrix , such that (i.e., is full-rank),

where is called the projection matrix.

If is not full rank (i.e., ), given an orthonormal basis matrix of , the orthonormal projection of onto can be expressed as

which can be equivalently written as if the basis vectors are orthogonal rather than orthonormal.

Examples

Projection Onto a Hyperplane

Conditions: Let , and let be a hyperplane3.4c in , such that .

Task: Compute the minimum distance from to .

Solution: Since is the normal direction of the hyperplane, it follows that (since the error term of a projection is always perpendicular to the space of the projection). This, in turn, implies that the error term is some scaling of , such that

Since , it also follows that . As such,

Therefore, , meaning that the distance .
