Outer Product Form of the SVD
A matrix with rank can be decomposed using the outer product form of the SVD as
where and are sets of orthonormal vectors known respectively as the left singular vectors and right singular vectors of , whereas are positive ordered scalars known as the singular values of .
Intuition
Essentially, we can algorithmically compute the SVD as follows:
- Find and sort , the orthogonal eigenvalue-eigenvector pairs of .
- For each pair, find:
We can prove the second step using . Then will be 0 for and 1 for since the right singular vectors are orthonormal. As such, .
Alternatively, we can find and sort , which are the eigenvalue-eigenvector pairs of . Then, or .
This SVD form is messy, albeit the most efficient to compute since it decomposes into rank-1 matrices.
Properties
is an orthonormal basis of
Since , we only need to prove that it spans :
The result is a linear combination of . Therefore, . Since both and have the same dimension , they are equal.
is an orthonormal basis of
Since , we can proceed using the same reasoning as above.
is an eigenvalue-eigenvector pair of
For any :
We obtain this from the fact that and since all elements of both sets are orthonormal to each other by set orthonormality. Therefore the equation is non-zero if and only if .
is an eigenvalue-eigenvector pair of
Proceed by same reasoning as above.
Since due to orthonormality the equation is non-zero only when .
